Assessing Sustainability Awareness in VET Schools: The GreenVET School Survey

Sustainability has become a key focus in vocational education, shaping the way institutions prepare students for a greener future. To support this transition, the GreenVET School Survey offers a structured approach to assessing sustainability awareness and practices within vocational education and training (VET) schools.

The GreenVET School Survey is a questionnaire template designed to help VET institutions evaluate their current engagement with sustainability. Developed as part of the GreenVET Framework, this tool enables schools to measure the awareness, attitudes, and actions of students, teachers, and administrative staff regarding environmental sustainability.

Many VET schools recognize the need to integrate sustainability into their curricula and daily operations but often lack clear insights into their starting point. The GreenVET School Survey provides a structured way to identify gaps in sustainability awareness, measure current sustainability initiatives and their effectiveness, collect feedback from different stakeholders within the institution and guide schools in developing greener policies and practices.

The survey is designed to evaluate various aspects of sustainability in VET schools, including:

  • Institutional Commitment: How well is sustainability embedded in the school’s mission and strategic planning?
  • Teaching and Learning: Are sustainability principles incorporated into vocational courses and training programs?
  • Campus Practices: Does the school implement eco-friendly initiatives such as waste reduction, energy efficiency, and sustainable procurement?
  • Community Engagement: Are students and staff involved in sustainability projects beyond the school environment?

The questionnaire is intended for use by school administrators, teachers, and sustainability coordinators who want to gain a deeper understanding of their institution’s sustainability efforts. The survey can be adapted to different contexts and used as a benchmark to track progress over time.

Once the survey results are collected, VET schools can analyze the data to pinpoint strengths and areas for improvement, develop targeted strategies to enhance sustainability education and operations, foster a culture of environmental responsibility among students and staff and share best practices with other VET institutions as part of a broader green transition.

The GreenVET School Survey is available for free in English and can be downloaded from the official GreenVET platform.
