Description of the practice
The Repair Café is a collaborative project initiated by the Vocational School BSZ Neumarkt and bfz Neumarkt to provide practical learning opportunities for students while serving the local community. Held once a month, the event invites anyone to bring broken items for repair or to offer their own repair skills. It takes place on the school premises and is free of charge.
This initiative is particularly beneficial for students in the cooperation class, who thrive in hands-on, experiential learning environments. According to Dr. Alina Chernova, the project coordinator, many students struggle with traditional classroom instruction. The Repair Café allows them to engage in meaningful work that builds confidence and practical skills.
Beyond education, the Repair Café promotes sustainability by encouraging the repair and reuse of items instead of discarding them. It fosters a sense of environmental responsibility and community solidarity, helping to combat the throwaway culture and reduce waste.
