What is the resource about?
This article describes a new 10-week culinary programme at Colchester High School called “Beyond Education, Being Human”, offered in partnership with the Thomas Franks Foundation for Year 11 pupils. The course teaches students how to prepare and cook healthy meals, and these meals are then distributed to charities like Beacon House to feed homeless and disadvantaged people in the community. Participants also gain a Level 1 Food Safety Certificate, developing valuable life skills and a sense of social responsibility.

Why is the resource useful for VET actors?
This resource is useful for VET actors because it shows how practical skill development (culinary skills, food safety, nutrition) can be linked with social enterprise and community impact, bridging classroom learning with real-world application. It provides a compelling example of how vocational skills in hospitality, catering and food preparation can be taught in a way that fosters empathy, social responsibility and employability, supporting both personal and professional growth. Moreover, the inclusion of a recognised certificate (Level 1 Food Safety) highlights how structured training pathways can benefit learners’ future careers.
