What is the resource about?
Energy@School was an EU-funded project under the Interreg Central Europe programme that aimed to improve energy efficiency and awareness in schools by training pupils, teachers and staff to become Junior and Senior Energy Guardians responsible for reducing energy consumption. The innovative approach combined behavioural change, awareness-raising activities, workshops and tools (smart meters, apps and practical exercises) to foster energy smart cultures in 41 primary and secondary schools across seven European countries, including Austria. Results included energy consumption reductions, CO₂ emission decreases, training programmes and digital learning tools designed for replication in other regions

Why is the resource useful for VET actors?
This resource is useful for VET actors because it demonstrates how education programmes can integrate behaviour-based energy efficiency strategies and hands-on learning to reduce energy use — competencies relevant to green jobs and sustainability training in vocational contexts. The concept of energy guardians shows how learners can take responsibility for monitoring and managing energy consumption, linking soft skills (awareness, teamwork) with practical skills in energy management, monitoring technologies, and energy-efficient behaviours. Additionally, the project’s tools (apps, management plans, guidelines) can inspire curriculum design and project-based modules in VET programmes focused on energy, building services, environmental management and smart technologies
