What is the resource about?

The study develops and validates a new measurement tool called the Whole Institution Approach (WIA) Scale to assess how sustainability is implemented in educational institutions. It is based on data from schools, vocational education, and higher education in Germany and examines how learners’ and educators’ experiences of sustainability relate to learning outcomes and behavior. The findings show that stronger implementation of WIAs is linked to higher motivation, empowerment, and more sustainable actions among both students and educators.

Why is the resource useful for VET actors?

This study is relevant for vocational education and training because it shows that a whole-institution approach to sustainability can strengthen both learning outcomes and sustainable behaviour among learners and educators. In VET contexts, where learning is closely connected to workplaces and real-world practice, embedding sustainability across the entire institution can make training more meaningful and effective. It also provides a practical tool (the WIA scale) that VET providers can use to assess and improve how sustainability is integrated into teaching, organisation, and institutional culture.
